Our Journey Through Time

1894 — Consecration

Ampthill Lodge No. 2490 was formally consecrated in June 1894, establishing a permanent Masonic presence in the town of Ampthill. The Lodge quickly became an important part of local Masonic life in Bedfordshire.

Early 1900s — Growth

During the early decades of the twentieth century, the Lodge welcomed a steadily growing membership drawn from local tradesmen, professionals and public servants. Historic minute books from this period record ceremonies, charitable activity and visiting Brethren from across the Province.

First World War

Like many Lodges across the country, Ampthill Lodge was affected by the events of the First World War. Membership numbers fluctuated during this period, though the Lodge continued to meet and maintain its traditions despite national uncertainty.

1920s–1930s

The interwar years saw the Lodge strengthen both socially and ceremonially. Festive Boards, charitable fundraising and strong attendance became defining features of Lodge life during this period.

Second World War

The challenges of the Second World War again affected the Lodge and its members. Even so, records show that the Lodge continued to function wherever possible, preserving continuity and maintaining the spirit of Freemasonry during difficult national circumstances.

Post-War Years

Following the war, Ampthill Lodge entered a long period of renewal and stability. New generations of members joined the Lodge while traditions and ceremonial practices continued to be carefully preserved.

Present Day

Today, Ampthill Lodge remains an active and welcoming Lodge within the Province of Bedfordshire. Alongside its ceremonial traditions and charitable work, the Lodge is now also preserving and digitising its historic records to ensure its story continues for future generations.
