PUBLISHED MARCH 2025

In the early twentieth century, Ampthill Lodge witnessed an important milestone in its history with the opening and dedication of a new Masonic Temple in Ampthill. This historic summons, issued for a Lodge of Emergency meeting, offers a fascinating insight into the development of Freemasonry within the town and the continued growth of the Lodge during that period.

The document not only reflects the formality and traditions of Freemasonry at the time, but also highlights the significance of establishing dedicated premises for Masonic meetings and ceremonies within Ampthill.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many Lodges met in hotels, inns or hired rooms before eventually moving into dedicated Masonic premises. The opening of a permanent Masonic Temple often marked a major step forward in the life of a Lodge, symbolising stability, growth and a lasting presence within the local community.

For Ampthill Lodge No. 2490, the dedication of new premises represented another important chapter in the Lodge’s long and distinguished history within Bedfordshire Freemasonry.

“The establishment of dedicated Masonic premises marked an important milestone in the continuing development of Ampthill Lodge.”
